People often wonder about fighting stances and ways to be ready for an attack when someone is nearly in your face.
I like to use what I call the stance of no stance.
Imagine someone is in front of you about 18 inches away at the most. The situation may become heated so you want to be on your gaurd. I like to stand with my feet about shoulder width apart and I hold my arms in one of two ways.
The first way is to have your arms loosely crossed across your chest. With your strong arm under the other you can quickly throw out a backfist or a blocking or grabbing move.
The main aim is to be ready to both strike out and protect your head and torso from any strikes. The full area to protect is from your head to your knees, I call this the combat zone. You should use your legs to block any lower body attacks but that is for another thread.
The second way is more for when you are going to attack. You talk to the guy waving your arms around your upper combat zone, acting like you dont want to fight. "Look buddy, I dont want any trouble (waving your hands around strategically). From this you can get your hands near his face without him expecting a strike. You can explode with any strike from this stance.
A major key to any of this is aggression training. you must be able to turn a switch and become a fire breathing monster at will. Once again, this is for another thread.
Just some basic suggestions for a realistic stance in a potential street fight situation.
